Overview of Environmental Risks of Landfill Disposal Sites
In 1997, there were 503 landfills in Japan without water interception facilities, and the risk of lead and cadmium leaching into groundwater was identified as a problem. 2010s saw the progress of the Eco-Town project in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, while arsenic was reportedly detected in leachate leaks in Gifu Prefecture. In the 2020s, lead exceeding standard values was detected in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture, and the closure of old facilities became an urgent priority; Dowa Holdings and JFE Engineering improved leachate treatment technology to achieve over 95% removal of toxic substances. Furthermore, in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Toyota Motor Corporation has developed pavement material using incinerated ash. Nationwide technological innovation and efforts to address issues continue.
