The discarded mountain and the people of Chiba: a record of a struggle for the future

The discarded mountain and the people of Chiba: a record of a struggle for the future

Since 2001, illegal dumping of industrial waste has become a serious problem in Chiba Prefecture, and a monitoring system with 275 employees was established mainly in Futtsu and Kimitsu cities. In the 2020s, drone surveillance and recycling facilities were expanded and 350 cases of illegal dumping were detected annually. However, only 80% of the total 100,000 tons of illegal dumping is disposed of properly, and the presence of illegal companies is an issue. Efforts by local residents and businesses continue, and the search for a sustainable future continues.
