Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Hexavalent Chromium Contamination Cleanup Measures - December 2021

Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Hexavalent Chromium Contamination Cleanup Measures - December 2021
In December 2021, a survey conducted in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, revealed that the concentration of hexavalent chromium in groundwater was 10 times the standard value (0.5 mg/L). In response to this problem, the city and prefecture secured a total budget of 1.5 billion yen and initiated a purification project. Over an area of approximately 10,000 square meters, 5,200 tons of contaminated soil was excavated and detoxified at a treatment facility. In addition, 20 tons of iron sulfate was injected to reduce hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium. 15 observation wells were installed to monitor contamination in real time. 2023 saw the concentration of hexavalent chromium in groundwater drop below the standard (<0.05 mg/L), and further cleanup plans are underway. This project is attracting attention as a model case for groundwater contamination countermeasures in other municipalities.
