Overview of Russia's Ocean Dumping of Radioactive Waste
During the Cold War, Russia dumped approximately 18,000 pieces of radioactive waste into the Barents and Kara Seas in the Arctic region, causing serious ecological impacts. In the 2010s, progress was made in geological disposal technology and in raising waste in the Arctic, but the risk of ice loss has increased, and in the 2020s, international waste management norms must be strengthened while studying past impacts. Russia's dumping problem highlights the importance of environmental protection and international cooperation.
