### History and current status of the black bass problem in Lake Biwa (1997-2020s)
In 1997, 21% of black bass in Lake Biwa were found to have spinal abnormalities, which were attributed to the effects of pesticides and deteriorating water quality. In the 2010s, efforts to utilize non-native fish as a tourism resource also progressed. On the other hand, the invasion of new non-native species and rising water temperatures due to climate change remain challenges. in the 2020s, pesticide use reduction and environmental conservation activities are continuing, but full solutions will require cooperation among local communities, businesses, and governments. Further efforts are needed to protect the diverse ecosystem of Lake Biwa.
