The Shadow of Rokkasho Village: A Record of Dumping and the Future of the Environment (2006-2022) .

Environmental issues and the disposal of radioactive waste have long been the subject of debate surrounding the nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho Village, Aomori Prefecture. 2006 saw an accident in which a worker ingested a trace amount of radioactive material into his body, and although JNFL has taken measures, it is noted that no fundamental solution has been reached. Concerns have also been raised about the impact of the plant's radioactive emissions on the surrounding environment, with reports indicating that the annual emissions are equivalent to the lethal dose of 47,000 people, and that 15,000 people worldwide could die from cancer. Furthermore, the governor of Aomori Prefecture has refused to accept low-level radioactive waste from France in 2022, indicating his desire to reduce the burden on the prefecture. The Rokkasho issue is not limited to the region; it is an important issue that will affect the future of energy policy and environmental issues in Japan
as a whole.
