Water Resource Crisis in Africa and South Asia - 2020s
In the 2020s, Africa and South Asia are experiencing a serious water crisis. Approximately 418,000,000 people in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to drinking water, and supplies in urban areas are strained by rapid population growth. In Lagos, Nigeria, there is an annual demand for more than 1000000000 liters of water, and water is frequently cut off due to aging infrastructure. In Gauteng Province, South Africa, drought has caused a 20% shortfall in water supply, with growing socioeconomic impacts.
In South Asia, 25% of groundwater is contaminated with arsenic, and in Bangladesh, 1,000 people a year suffer health problems. In Kenya and Ethiopia, agricultural harvests have decreased by more than 30% and water prices have skyrocketed by 400%; by 2021, about 140,000 people across Africa will have been forced to migrate due to climate disasters. To address this, Veolia and BASF are promoting wastewater recycling, and the World Bank is investing $5 billion in infrastructure development by 2030.
