### Current status of wastewater treatment in Shanghai and Manila Bay - 2020s
Asia generates approximately 31 billion cubic meters of wastewater annually, 90% of which is discharged untreated into rivers and the ocean. Shanghai treats 1.7 million cubic meters of wastewater per day to remove lead and arsenic. Manila Bay in the Philippines receives 50 million cubic meters of untreated wastewater per year, and Veolia and BASF are pursuing a project to reuse 20 billion cubic meters per year. In India, 100 million liters of wastewater flows into the Ganges River every day, and with JICA's support, the treatment rate is planned to be increased to 25% by 2025. In Indonesia, a project to improve the treatment rate from 14% to 20% is underway with support from JICA and ADB, and a 10 million cubic meter per day treatment facility is in operation in Jakarta.
