Hexavalent Chromium Pollution Remediation Measures - Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, December 2021

Hexavalent Chromium Pollution Remediation Measures - Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, December 2021

In December 2021, hexavalent chromium levels in groundwater at a former waste treatment site in Mito City were found to be ten times the standard value (0.5 mg/L). The remediation project, with a budget of 1.5 billion yen, included soil excavation of 10000 square meters, removal of 5200 tons of soil, and the injection of 20 tons of ferrous sulfate. Additionally, 15 observation wells were installed for real-time monitoring. By 2023, contamination levels decreased to below the standard value (0.05 mg/L). This initiative serves as a model for addressing similar pollution issues nationwide.
