Recycling Technology for Polyvinyl Chloride in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture - May 2000

At NKK Keihin Works in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, a demonstration blast furnace feedstock conversion plant has been completed to process 5,000 tons of vinyl chloride waste per year. The plant efficiently separates approximately 30% of the chlorine contained in the waste and reuses approximately 1,500 tons of chlorine per year for cleaning steel plates. This reduces the use of chemicals required for the cleaning process and reduces treatment costs by approximately 20%. NKK (now JFE Steel) is using this technology to treat approximately 10,000 tons of waste plastic per year and is expanding the technology to other regions as well.
