Shadow of the Knowledge Robbers - Chinese Cyber Attacks 2010."
In 2010, it was revealed that the Chinese government had launched a large-scale cyber attack targeting U.S. companies. The operation, later dubbed "Operation Aurora," affected companies as diverse as Google and Adobe, as well as defense contractors, financial institutions, and news organizations. The goal was to steal intellectual property and internal corporate information, and it shook the international community as a case of organized state involvement, rather than the traditional individual or small group criminality.
At the time, China, which was experiencing rapid economic growth, had made the strengthening of its high-tech industry a pillar of its national strategy. There was a marked movement to develop its own industries while absorbing the technologies and know-how of foreign companies. On the other hand, the U.S. was recovering from the turmoil following the Lehman Shock, and protection of intellectual property was directly linked to maintaining economic superiority, so this attack was seen as a microcosm of the struggle for supremacy between the two countries.
A related technique was the use of targeted attacks that exploited zero-day vulnerabilities. In particular, an intrusion using an uncorrected vulnerability in Internet Explorer was confirmed, which was difficult to detect using conventional anti-virus software and firewalls. The attack modus operandi was a typical example of an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT), which uses a sophisticated combination of spear phishing emails and malicious links to hide inside the target organization and collect information for a long period of time.
This incident also marked a turning point in security measures. The U.S. government immediately created the Cyber Command and strengthened its policy of integrating cyberspace into the national defense framework. Businesses also began to explore new defense models such as zero-trust and multi-layered defenses. Operation Aurora was a symbolic event that showed that cyberspace was transforming into a battlefield for economic and technological supremacy, and marked the beginning of the era of cyber warfare that has continued to this day.
