Agbogbloshie, Ghana's E-Waste Problem - Summary, November 2023
Agbogbloshie is known as the "world's largest e-waste graveyard," with approximately 500000 tons of e-waste illegally brought in from Europe and the U.S. each year. Devices such as computers and smartphones contain hazardous materials like lead, cadmium, and mercury, which are improperly processed, contaminating soil and water sources. Young people and children are particularly affected as they engage in manual dismantling tasks, leading to health issues like respiratory diseases and neurological disorders. Local governments, NGOs, and electronics companies like Dell and HP are working on recycling support and regulatory reinforcement, but insufficient monitoring keeps the problem severe.
