Development of lightweight materials using recycled waste glass bottles and the historical background in the early 2000s

In the early 2000s, the establishment of a recycling-oriented society was a national issue in Japan, and policies to promote waste reduction and resource reuse were rapidly developed. The Basic Law for Establishing a Recycling-based Society (enacted in 2000), the Home Appliance Recycling Law (2001), and the Construction Recycling Law (2002) were successively enacted, creating a trend to redefine waste from something to be disposed of to something to be recycled as a resource. Under these circumstances, Trim Corporation undertook the development of porous lightweight materials made from waste glass bottles.

In the past, recycling of glass was difficult due to colored glass and foreign matter, but Trim has succeeded in creating a porous structure containing air bubbles through the pulverization and firing processes, and converting it into a lightweight material with excellent heat insulation properties for construction and civil engineering applications. This technology was highly evaluated for its contribution to the realization of a recycling-oriented society through environmental ventures, as it both reduces waste and opens up new markets.

At the time, Japan was facing an increasing amount of construction by-products and a growing shortage of final disposal sites, and the introduction of recycled materials into the construction field was a major social demand. In addition, the Kyoto Protocol (adopted in 1997 and entered into force in 2005) was a background for emphasizing global warming countermeasures, and the reduction of CO₂ emissions through resource recycling was also a matter of international concern.

The development of this lightweight material demonstrated that waste recycling is not merely an extension of waste disposal, but a "new resource creation" for building a sustainable society. This is truly a case that symbolizes the direction of environmental policy and technological innovation that Japan faced in the early 2000s.
