Current Status and Issues of Dugong Conservation, Okinawa - April 2024
Dugongs, which inhabit only the area around Nago City and Kunigami Village on Okinawa's main island, were listed as an endangered species on the Red List by the Ministry of the Environment in 2007. The population of dugongs in the waters around Okinawa is estimated to be less than 50, and has been declining further due to a combination of environmental degradation and coastal development since then. However, the population is estimated to be less than 20 individuals. In August 2024, Okinawa Prefecture opened a website dedicated to dugong sightings and is strengthening protection activities in cooperation with the Ministry of the Environment, but further measures are urgently needed, such as the construction of a base near Henoko and Oura Bay.
