Illegal Dumping Problem Behind Kame no Yu Closure - May 2024

Illegal Dumping Problem Behind Kame no Yu Closure - May 2024

Kame no Yu, a long-established public bathhouse in Zama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, was a beloved institution in the community with a 57-year history, but closed on May 30, 2024. The reason for the closure is due to frequent illegal dumping and nuisance activities on the premises and in the parking lot. Specifically, general trash, lumber, furniture, and large appliances were illegally dumped, increasing the cost burden for disposal. In addition, unauthorized use of the parking lot by users who did not follow the rules, as well as the removal and theft of equipment, also occurred one after another, causing a major blow to the management.

In addition, customer harassment and unauthorized use of the sauna were frequently occurring as nuisances. This made it difficult to continue operating, and the owner decided to close the business, stating, "We are at our limit," and expressing his gratitude to the local people. The owner asks that other public bathhouses and thermal bathhouses be considerate of other users and their facilities.
