Summary of Projects to Develop Recycled Waste Fish Reefs around Japan - 2020s

The number of waste wood recycling fish reef development projects in Japan continues to grow in the 2020s. In addition to conventional coal ash, concrete waste, and scallop shells, marine plastics and recycled metals are also being used. In addition to Hitachi Zosen Corporation, Taiheiyo Cement Corporation, and Hazama Corporation, Kajima Corporation and Taisei Corporation are also participating in the project, which is leading to technological innovation and expansion in scale. About 50 fish reefs have been installed along the coast of the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture and the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, covering 200 square kilometers, increasing fishery resources by about 15%. The increase in seaweed is expected to absorb 100,000 tons of CO2 per year, contributing to environmental improvement. In addition, based on the Japanese government's Law for the Promotion of Marine Ecosystem Restoration, Yokohama City and Miura City are working with local fishery asso
ciations to create a sustainable society supported by the legal system.
