Groundwater Conservation in Kumamoto City - 1999 to 2020s
In 1999, Kumamoto City enacted a groundwater conservation ordinance and began efforts to prevent groundwater depletion; in the 2000s, groundwater recharge, rainwater infiltration facilities, and a groundwater conservation fund were established; in the 2010s, in response to climate change and the Kumamoto earthquake, the monitoring system and reforestation project were enhanced. In the 2020s, groundwater levels exceeded the standard level by 2 meters, and reforestation activities have progressed with the cooperation of local companies and through the "Kumamoto Groundwater Future Project". While groundwater conservation in Kumamoto City is attracting attention as a sustainable model case, addressing climate change remains a challenge.
