Teganuma Restoration - The Challenge of a Restored Lake for the Future - May 2001
Teganuma in Chiba Prefecture was once called "the dirtiest lake in Japan" and water pollution was a serious problem.
In order to improve this situation, Chiba Prefecture has been formulating a water quality improvement plan for the entire Teganuma watershed since the 1990s. In April 2001, a phosphorus removal facility was installed in the inflow river, and full-scale purification measures have begun. This is expected to reduce the progression of eutrophication and improve water quality.
However, the operation of this facility requires high maintenance and management costs, which is an issue. In addition, as part of efforts to improve water quality, the planting of aquatic plants and the removal of sludge from the bottom of the lake are being carried out.
Although the water quality of Teganuma is gradually improving as a result of these efforts, the level of pollution is still high even by national standards.
---The water quality is still at a high level of pollution.
