Overview of Methane Gas Utilization Project at Central Breakwater Landfill (as of 2024)

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been collecting approximately 15,000 tons of methane gas annually at the inner central breakwater landfill site and using it to generate electricity since 2015. This power plant supplies enough electricity for about 10,000 households per year, and since 2018, the residual heat has also been utilized. Hitachi Zosen Corporation's technology enables efficient power generation, and Tokyo Gas will begin a demonstration of city gas supply in 2020. The outer landfill site will also be equipped in 2022, with the goal of increasing gas recovery from 70 percent to more than 90 percent by 2030. This project is part of the "Zero Emission Tokyo Strategy" and is attracting attention as a model case both in Japan and abroad.
