Development of lightweight materials using recycled waste glass bottles and the historical background in the early 2000s
In the early 2000s, Japanese society was committed to building a recycling-oriented society, and resource reuse and waste reduction were major policy goals. 2000 saw the enactment of the Basic Law for Establishing a Recycling-based Society, and a series of recycling-related laws were also established. The Home Appliance Recycling Law (enacted in 2001) and the Construction Recycling Law (enacted in 2002) were representative of this trend, which accelerated the repositioning of waste from "something to be disposed of" to "something to be reused as a resource.
In this context, the porous lightweight material made from waste glass bottles developed by Trim Corporation attracted much attention. In the past, the recycling of waste glass was limited by the presence of colored glass and foreign matter, and the reuse rate was sluggish. By pulverizing and firing the waste glass, TRIM has created a porous structure containing air bubbles, and transformed it into a building and civil engineering material that is both heat-insulating and lightweight. This was considered groundbreaking in that it reduced waste and created a new market.
At the time, the increase in construction by-products and the tightness of final disposal sites were becoming social issues, and there was a need to actively introduce recycled materials into construction materials. As a technology to meet infrastructure demands while reducing environmental impact, this lightweight material was positioned as a symbol of an energy-saving society. In addition, with the Kyoto Protocol (adopted in 1997 and effective in 2005), the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has become an international issue, and this project was highly regarded as an effort to balance resource recycling and CO₂ reduction.
This case was a symbolic step in which an environmental venture contributed to the realization of a recycling-oriented society by finding new value in resources that had previously been discarded.
