A young shadow in the oiran's mirror, a soft moment spilling over on a Yoshiwara afternoon (Late Edo period)
While the oiran is filling her smoking pipe and reading through a customer's letter, the bald girl quietly looks into the mirror and arranges her hair and downy hair, reflecting the soft human time that spills over into the harsh life of Yoshiwara. The bald girl is a young girl around ten years old who learns manners and behavior while taking care of the oiran, and is raised to be a future prostitute. The preparation of a courtesan is a long ceremony in which the hair stylist ties up the yoshiwara topknot and applies layers of white powder and rouge, and the splendor of the ceremony is a place of longing for the bald girl's future self. The act of checking one's own image by looking into a mirror when the oiran (courtesan) looked away is a natural desire for a girl to grow taller in imitation of an adult. Ukiyoe also depict a bald girl peering into the oiran's preparations, showing the warmth that was nurtured in a communal life. Yoshiwara was a harsh world known as the "worl
d of suffering," but in the midst of this reality, there was also a kindness that existed as the oiran gently watched over the bald girl. The young shadow of the bald girl looking into the mirror symbolizes the warmth of life lurking behind the harshness and the quiet dreams of the girls.
