Afterglow of Asama Villa until the end of the youth season 1972-1974

Afterglow of Asama Villa until the end of the youth season 1972-1974

The Asama Sanso Incident was a unique incident in postwar history. In February 1972, a group of the United Red Army holed up in a mountain lodge in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, and engaged the police in a gun battle that lasted more than ten hours. Television broadcast the clash live, and the sound of water trucks splashing snow, the moment a steel ball shattered the outer wall, and the sight of the perpetrators clinging to the roof flowed directly into the family living room, where dinner was being prepared. It was a moment when the abstraction of ideology was crushed by the reality of imminent violence, and the scene before our eyes, rather than the words of ideology, was etched as a deep scar on the hearts of the people.

In the relevant sections of the magazine, this incident is treated as an inescapable symbol of the mental landscape of youth. The student and anti-war movements of the late 1960s certainly had the enthusiasm of those who believed they could change the social system. However, the revelation of the purge at the mountain base, and the holocaust and shootout at Asama Sanso, brought a definite collapse to that enthusiasm. The ideals of the revolution were crushed before the violence of reality, and the ideals crumbled in blood and snow. The disappointment left a deep shadow on the hearts of the young people of that time.

In 1974, while the shock was still fresh in the minds of the youth, the social atmosphere was beginning to shift in a different direction. The trial of the United Red Army was underway, and reports of the history of violence and purges continued to circulate, which further dampened expectations for politics. The oil shock of the previous year had brought soaring prices and a shortage of goods, and daily life itself, rather than political ideals, was pressing people as a serious problem. Young people were beginning to distance themselves from the heat of politics, shifting their values toward culture, personal life, and consumption, and exploring the touch of a new era.

Thus, the Asama Sanso Incident is more than just an incident; it stands as a symbol of the turning point of an era. The name stands as an inescapable signifier when speaking of the process by which the political season comes to an end, and even illuminates the malaise and quiet resignation that was hovering in 1974.
