Circulation System of Kokubu Farm - December 2002
Located in Otama Village, Adachi-gun, Fukushima Prefecture, Kokubu Farm has introduced a recycling-oriented agricultural system that reuses local organic matter. Under this system, the farm partners with a cooperative of inns in Gakuonsen, and composts approximately 200 tons of food scraps and livestock waste annually. This has resulted in a 40% reduction in disposal costs for waste generated at the inns in Gakuonsen. Approximately 100 tons of food waste is collected annually from onsen ryokan and 50 tons from restaurants, which are broken down and converted into compost at a composting facility. This compost is used on approximately 20 hectares of farmland at the Kokubu Farm and is utilized to produce approximately 150 tons of crops annually.
In addition, Kokubu Farm accepts about 500 tons of organic waste annually from the entire Adachi-gun area, and has succeeded in reducing the waste disposal costs for the entire region by 30%, or about 5 million yen. After the introduction of the composting system, annual waste disposal costs decreased from approximately 15 million yen to 10 million yen.
The composting system is supported by the "Fukushima Organic Recycling Cooperative Association," and is realized through joint operation with a local company, Fukushima Biotech Co. This system efficiently processes organic waste from the entire region, and is attracting attention as a model case for recycling-oriented agriculture, which is spreading among farmers in Fukushima Prefecture.
