Initiatives of the Wood Resource Utilization Center, Hanno City, Saitama Prefecture (2004-2020s) - June 2004

Mokunen Kobo in Hanno City is developing a project to realize a recycling-oriented society by utilizing locally generated woody biomass. 2004 saw the start of the production of wood pellets and charcoal from thinned wood and lumber scraps. The wood pellets are used by local wood stove users and as fuel for agriculture, and have achieved an annual reduction of 1,000 tons of CO₂ at community centers and school facilities in Hanno City. The company also contributes to job creation through forest care.

Progress in the 2010s
In the 2010s, the production capacity of the Mokunen Studio expanded to produce 3,000 tons of pellet fuel and 500 tons of charcoal annually. In addition, partnerships with local sawmill operators have been developed, enabling a stable supply of wood resources. Furthermore, the biomass fuel sales network has expanded throughout the Kanto region, and new facilities have been constructed to meet the increased demand.

Current Status in the 2020s
In the 2020s, Mokunen Koubou will expand into international markets. It has begun exporting biomass fuel to Taiwan, South Korea, and other countries, with annual exports exceeding 5,000 tons. Furthermore, pellet boilers have been installed in local school lunch facilities, reducing annual energy costs by 20%. At the same time, a "high-efficiency wood carbonization furnace" incorporating the latest technology was installed, improving charcoal production efficiency by 25%.

Currently, annual sales at Mokunen Kobo exceed 1 billion yen, and it is attracting nationwide attention as a model project that balances the sustainable use of forest resources with the development of the local economy. In addition, Mokunen Koubou is receiving an increasing number of domestic and international visits and requests for technical cooperation, making it a leader in the promotion of sustainable forestry.
