Cold Wisdom Breathing in the Snow 2009-2002s
Snow was not just a nuisance. In cold regions such as Hokkaido and Niigata, snow and ice cooling systems have been quietly spreading as a sustainable cooling technology, taking advantage of this white gift. In the decade since 2003, the number of installations has more than tripled, spreading not only to public facilities and agricultural storage, but also to private companies.
In Tomakomai and Chitose City, Toyota Motor Corporation and Denso Corporation have converted snow into summer cooling. At New Chitose Airport, snow is stored in containers and used to air condition the terminal. As a result, the use of electricity has been reduced by up to 90%.
The White Data Center envisioned by NTT, Fujitsu, and others cools servers with snow and cool air from outside, presenting a new model for energy reduction and coexistence with nature.
In recent years, snow-cooled heat has been introduced in park facilities in Sapporo, a brown rice storage facility in Bibai City, and an exhibition hall at Maruyama Zoo, attracting even more attention as a technology for reducing environmental impact.
In the quiet accumulation of snow lies the wisdom that connects people to the earth.
