### History and Current Status of Methane Hydrate Development (1996-2020s)
Methane hydrate is attracting attention as a next-generation energy resource with large reserves in the seas around Japan. The government is currently developing technologies for commercialization in the 2020s, with particular focus on stable gas production technologies, minimization of environmental impact, and cost reduction. The government is aiming for commercialization in the late 2030s, which is expected to improve domestic energy self-sufficiency and reduce dependence on foreign resources. Methane hydrate has the potential to become a new pillar of Japan's energy policy.
