Hydrogen Buses - The Future of Urban Transportation - Challenges for the 2020s
Hydrogen buses are an environmentally friendly means of public transportation powered by fuel cells, and with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as an opportunity, Toyota developed SORA, which is now in operation in Tokyo with approximately 100 units. In addition to Tokyo, test operations are being conducted in Kitakyushu City and Sapporo City, and the system is attracting attention as a model case for local energy production for local consumption in each region. The installation of hydrogen stations and the development of a supply network, however, are challenges, which are supported by government subsidies and technological development. The hydrogen bus is regarded as an important step toward achieving zero emissions.
