Incinerator Ash Reef Utilization Technology - November 1996

Incinerator Ash Reef Utilization Technology - November 1996
In 1996, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Hitachi Zosen Corporation jointly developed an innovative technology for using incinerator ash as a fishing reef that links waste disposal with the preservation of marine ecosystems. Fly ash produced from incinerated ash is mixed with concrete and installed as artificial fishing reefs in Tokyo Bay and the Seto Inland Sea to restore habitats for fish and other marine life. Demonstration tests have confirmed a 20% increase in fish populations after installation of the reefs, and the reefs are characterized by long-term stability and control of toxic substance runoff. This technology has also been introduced in South Korea and Taiwan, and is expected to spread as an environmental technology.
