Progress of Energy Projects in Sodegaura City - 2006 to 2020s
In 2006, Sodegaura City, Chiba Prefecture, planned a 100,000 kW middle power plant, "Nakasode Clean Power," to improve local energy self-sufficiency and reduce environmental impact. The project was promoted in cooperation with local residents as part of a renewable energy initiative. This plan was expected to utilize local wind resources in an attempt to balance energy and the environment.
In the 2020s, Sodegaura initiated an even larger energy project: in 2023, Mitsubishi Power announced the construction of three 1.95 GW natural gas-fired gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) plants under a contract with "Sodegaura Power Co. The project will feature state-of-the-art M701JAC gas turbines, designed to accommodate hydrogen combustion, and is expected to be a step toward achieving the 2030 decarbonization goal. Furthermore, with the capital participation of Tokyo Gas, the project is attracting attention as an initiative to both ensure a stable urban supply and reduce environmental impact.
In addition, Doosan Škoda Power plans a 75 MW biomass power plant in Sodegaura City in 2020. This biomass facility will use a dual structure steam turbine to improve power generation efficiency and is positioned as a model case for sustainable energy supply. In this way, Sodegaura City is building a diverse energy supply system that combines natural gas and biomass, and is working with the local community to create a sustainable urban energy infrastructure.
