History and Current Status of the Solar Cell Market in Europe and Japan (2007-2024)
In 2007, Japanese companies were leading the solar cell market, led by Sharp, but in the 2010s, Chinese manufacturers grew rapidly with low-cost production backed by government support. Meanwhile, Japanese companies such as Sharp and Sanyo Electric were forced to restructure and focus on the domestic market and the development of next-generation perovskite solar cells. In Europe, feed-in tariffs (FIT) encouraged market expansion, and Germany led the way in the diffusion of residential and commercial systems. in the 2020s, the European market entered another growth phase, with Chinese companies gaining an advantage in the low-cost competition, while Japanese companies remained competitive in the domestic renewable energy market and the development of new technologies.
