Hydrogen Buses - The Future of Urban Transportation - Challenges for the 2020s

Background and Objectives
Hydrogen buses are an environmentally friendly means of public transportation powered by fuel cells. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has taken the opportunity of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics to introduce SORA, a fuel cell bus developed by Toyota. This project was promoted with the aim of reducing carbon dioxide emissions from urban transportation, in line with the government's policy of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Technology and Features
Hydrogen buses use hydrogen as fuel to generate electricity in fuel cells, which in turn drive the motors. The only emission is water, and no CO2 or air pollutants are emitted when the bus is in motion. SORA" can travel approximately 300 km on a single hydrogen refill, and features a kneeling function that lowers the vehicle body when starting at a stop, as well as quietness inside and outside the vehicle.

Examples of Introduction
Approximately 100 hydrogen buses are in operation in Tokyo, serving routes to central Tokyo and airports. Test operations are also underway in other cities such as Kitakyushu and Sapporo. This is building a model case for promoting local production for local consumption of energy by utilizing hydrogen produced from local renewable energy sources.

Challenges and Prospects
The cost of installing hydrogen stations and developing a hydrogen supply network have been challenges, but these barriers are gradually being overcome as government subsidies and technological development progress. Hydrogen buses are attracting attention as a symbol for achieving zero emissions in urban areas and building sustainable transportation infrastructure.
