Voices of objection echoed in the Shinano sky - June 2002

Voices of objection echoed in the Shinano sky - June 2002

In June 2002, a new wave of politics quietly but powerfully swept over the nature-rich mountains of Shinano-cho, Nagano Prefecture. Citizens in the small town voiced their opposition to the Self-Defense Forces' training exercises, bringing to light the deep fault line between national policy and the lives and ideas of local residents. The article clearly describes the process by which the residents, bewildered by the unusual sight of tanks, the noise of explosions, and the sudden arrival of helicopters, organized a signature drive and protest rallies, and attempted to express "the will of the people" through dialogue and action. It is not just a local opposition movement, but a question that quietly but surely poses fundamental themes such as "peace," "security," and "self-governance" to society. This movement, which took place in Nagano, far from the city, shows what it means to raise one's voice from one's own community against a national policy that one is "uninformed and
uninvolved" in.
