Water Purification Technology in France - January 2003
In France, small-scale municipalities are introducing natural purification technologies to reduce maintenance costs and improve water quality at sewage treatment facilities.
In particular, sand filtration methods, lagoon methods (using natural swamps), microbial filter beds, and technologies that utilize plant rhizospheres are becoming popular, especially in areas with a population of less than 2,000.
For example, in the city of Meze, these technologies are being combined to develop measures that combine efficiency in sewage treatment with environmental conservation and regional development.
In water purification using the plant rhizosphere, a system has been introduced to remove pollutants such as nitrogen and phosphorus by utilizing the nutrient absorption function of specific plants.
This method requires less maintenance and management and can be operated at a lower cost than conventional advanced treatment facilities, and is expected to be increasingly adopted throughout France in the future.
