Utilization of Agricultural Land as a Biomass Resource and Shell Detergent (Yakumo Town, Hokkaido) - December 2008
Hokuei, a company based in Yakumo Town, Hokkaido, is developing and selling environmentally friendly detergents and bath salts made from scallop shells. This initiative is attracting attention as part of a biomass policy that effectively utilizes unused resources generated in the region and protects agricultural land and water resources.
Hokuei has developed an environmentally friendly detergent called "Kurihog," which contains no surfactants, by calcining scallop shells at high heat to transform them into calcium hydroxide and then adding enzymes. This product is characterized by the fact that it does not foam and requires only one rinse, which also saves water. The company has also developed a hot water sanitizer, "Kaiarai Bi," which can be added to the bathtub to improve dry skin. These products are sold in 120g packets for 1,250 yen.
These products do not rely on chemical synthetics and are made from naturally derived materials, thus reducing the burden on rivers. They are also environmentally friendly local products, as residues are easily decomposed by nature even when used around farmlands and rice paddies.
In addition, Yakumo Town in Hokkaido is responding to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' "Agricultural Land Reform Plan" and is focusing on forming a new biomass utilization model through effective use of unused farmland and collaboration with agricultural corporations. In the southern Hokkaido region, where the scallop industry is thriving, the utilization of these local resources is an important pillar in supporting the diversification of industry and the shift to a sustainable regional economy.
The "Kurihorg" detergent developed by Hokuei is made from 100% natural scallop shells and contains no surfactants, fluorescent agents, colorants, bleaches, or fragrances. It is well received as a product that can be used safely even by people with sensitive skin and babies. It is also attracting attention from eco-conscious consumers, as the wastewater is naturally decomposed and returned to the environment while cleaning water pipes.
In addition, the company has also launched "Shell Pica," a toothpaste containing hydroxyapatite derived from scallop shells, which is expected to remineralize teeth and prevent cavities. These products have been adopted as Yakumo Town's hometown tax return gift and are widely used as part of a recycling-oriented industry that makes the most of local resources.
These efforts are expected to spread to other regions as an advanced example of how agriculture, fishing, and manufacturing can work together to realize a recycling-oriented society.
