Illegal dumping of waste along the Sagami River, Kanagawa Prefecture - December 1997

A large amount of waste (about 300 tons) has been illegally dumped along the Sagami River in Kanagawa Prefecture, resulting in serious water pollution and deterioration of the landscape. The dumped materials include construction waste (20 tons), plastic containers (10 tons), metal pieces (5 tons), used tires (50 tires), and suspected toxic waste oil. A local environmental group, the Sagami River Protection Association, has been promoting cleanup activities and has collected 10 tons so far. The prefectural government has invested a total of approximately 50 million yen to install 30 surveillance cameras and strengthen patrols in response to 250 reports. Increased waste disposal costs are behind the problem, requiring the introduction of a tracking and management system.
