Chongqing Air Pollution Control Overview - 1997 to 2020s
Chongqing's air pollution control progressed from 1997 to the 2020s: in 1997, emission standards were tightened, old vehicles were phased out, and coal consumption was reduced; in the 2000s, the Three Gorges Dam was completed to promote hydroelectric power generation and improve public transportation; in the 2010s, electric vehicles (EVs) became more common and industrial emissions were reduced. In the 2010s, the use of electric vehicles (EVs) and reduction of industrial emissions progressed, and PM2.5 concentrations improved from 70 μg/m³ to 50 μg/m³; by the 2020s, they had dropped to an average of 35 μg/m³, with hydropower and renewable energy sources accounting for 40% of total power generation. Chronic respiratory diseases decreased by 30% compared to the 2010s, but traffic congestion and smog problems remain a challenge. Efforts continue to be made to balance environmental protection and economic growth.
