E-Waste Issues in the Agbogbrosi District of Ghana, Africa - November 2023 Summary
The Agbogbrosi District is considered "the world's largest graveyard of e-waste," with approximately 5,000,000 tons of e-waste illegally brought in from Europe and the United States each year. Toxic substances such as lead, cadmium, and mercury contained in computers and smartphones are not properly disposed of, contaminating soil and water sources. In particular, young people and children are engaged in manual disassembly work, resulting in growing health problems such as respiratory illnesses and neurological disorders. The local government, NGOs, and electronics manufacturers Dell and HP are providing recycling support and strengthening regulations, but the monitoring system is inadequate and the problem remains serious.
