### Kumamoto Kuma River Flooding Disaster - July 2020

### Kumamoto Kuma River Flooding Disaster - July 2020

In July 2020, 14 people were killed at Senjuen, a special nursing home for the elderly, when the Kuma River in Kumamoto Prefecture overflowed due to torrential rain. The disaster was caused by a brief, torrential downpour that flooded homes and infrastructure across a wide area of Kumamoto Prefecture, including Yatsushiro City, Kuma Village, and Hitoyoshi City. Following the disaster, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and local company Kyushu Electric Power Co. have been strengthening levees and installing early warning systems, while Kumamoto Prefecture has been strengthening evacuation support plans for local residents. The increase in "linear precipitation zones" due to climate change is considered a future disaster prevention issue.
