History and Current Status of Dioxin Contamination in Miyoshi Town, Saitama Prefecture

History and Current Status of Dioxin Contamination in Miyoshi Town, Saitama Prefecture

In December 2000, dioxin levels exceeding the standard of 1500 pg-TEQ/g were detected in the vicinity of an industrial waste treatment plant in Miyoshi Town, Saitama Prefecture, and an investigation was initiated. The contamination was attributed to improper management of incinerator ash and plastic waste, and the prefecture and residents demanded prompt action due to concerns about health hazards. However, both concentrations are within the standard values. Overall, dioxin emissions in the prefecture have been reduced by more than 90% compared to the 1990s, and measures are still underway to maintain environmental standards.
