History of Port Improvements and Environmental Improvements at Shiogama Port, Miyagi Prefecture - April 2002 - November 2024
2002: Introduction of a purified seawall
In 2002, a "purification type seawall" was introduced at the port in the Mukaiyo district of Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, to improve the quality of the surrounding water and protect the ecosystem. This technology uses a gravel contact oxidation method, in which a microbial film adhering to the seawall surface decomposes organic pollutants such as nitrogen compounds and phosphates. Water purification was promoted in the bay, which is highly enclosed. The adoption of this technology improved the growing environment for scallops and oysters, the main targets of the fishing industry, and contributed to the local economy.
Ltd. participated in the construction of the facility and used 5070 mm diameter gravel procured from a local stone supplier. In addition, environmental monitoring was continuously conducted around the port area to ensure that the project would have no impact on Matsushima Bay, an important center for the tourism industry. Thanks to these techniques and cooperative efforts, Shiogama's port has become a model case for sustainable development.
2020s: Enhancement and Development of Port Functions
In the 2020s, Shiogama Port District made progress in addressing aging port facilities and strengthening logistics functions. Existing wharves were restructured and reopened to reduce their impact on the economy. In addition, Marine Gate Shiogama was constructed as part of the Shiogama Port Port Renaissance 21 Plan, which emphasizes tourism and exchange. This facility serves as a passenger terminal and tourist hub, attracting many citizens and tourists.
At the same time, a redevelopment project is underway in the inner part of the port, with the aim of creating a waterfront-type exchange and cultural center. Through cooperation with the national and prefectural governments and related organizations, a plan to combine the economic and environmental values of the port is on its way to realization.
