History and Current Status of Integrated Coastal Zone Management - Gyeonggi Bay
In 2004, illegal dumping became serious in Gyeonggi Bay, with several thousand tons of construction waste and waste plastic dumped annually. PCBs and lead were identified as hazardous substances, and the impact on groundwater pollution and the ecosystem became pronounced. ICZM (Integrated Coastal Zone Management) was introduced, and waste treatment facilities and education for residents were promoted. 2020s, illegal dumping reached approximately 50,000 tons per year, and the impact of lead, hexavalent chromium, etc. increased. 2023, "Korea Environmental Industry Corporation" will set up a facility to process 1,000 tons per day. While digital management and cleanup activities with the participation of local residents are proving effective, the challenge is to cope with the increase in waste resulting from urbanization. Sustainable management requires stronger policies and international cooperation.
