Nemuro City's Impact and Response to Global Warming
In Nemuro City, Hokkaido, the effects of climate change are growing. Sea ice flowing from the Arctic Circle decreased to less than 30% of its normal extent in the winter of 2006, and the catch of salmon and hokke (hokke) declined by about 20% from the previous year; in the 2020s, statistics from the Japan Meteorological Agency show that the frequency of short duration heavy rain has increased about 1.6 times that of 30 years ago, and the average annual temperature has increased 1.2°C per 100 years. This has resulted in a serious decline in harvest yields in agriculture due to high temperatures and rainfall fluctuations. Nemuro Fisheries Co., Ltd. is reviewing its fishing methods and strengthening resource management, while Nemuro Agricultural Products Co., Ltd. is promoting organic farming and introducing energy-saving agricultural equipment. In addition, Nemuro City has set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by FY2030 in its "Third Action Plan for the Promot
ion of Global Warming Countermeasures," and is promoting the introduction of renewable energy and energy conservation.
