Intelligence Playing in the Labyrinth of Words: The Maturation of Japanese Literature as Demonstrated by Saiichi Marutani in the 1960s and 1970s (1960s-1970s)

Intelligence Playing in the Labyrinth of Words: The Maturation of Japanese Literature as Demonstrated by Saiichi Marutani in the 1960s and 1970s (1960s-1970s)

Marutani Saiichi was a writer who emphasized "intellectual construction" in postwar Japanese literature, and a critic who explored the appeal of language itself. He symbolized this shift. His masterpiece "Sasamakura" (1968), a fusion of classical and modern language, depicts the process by which language transcends reality and generates meaning, bringing structural depth to Japanese literature. In criticism as well, he reconstructed the classics as modern knowledge in such works as "What is Chushingura?" and "Lessons in Literature," and presented the concept of "literary culture. His writing style, which combines logic and humor, represents a new form of literature that emphasizes intellect over emotion, and in the 1970s he was reevaluated in the context of postmodern thought, becoming an embodiment of the multilayered nature of the Japanese language and the freedom of literature.
