Illegal Dumping of Industrial Waste in Sodegaura City - April 1995
The problem of illegal dumping of industrial waste in Sodegaura City, Chiba Prefecture, that was uncovered in 1995 was caused by the development of the area as an industrial district and the challenges of waste disposal. Illegal dumping of industrial waste containing waste oil and chemical substances contaminated the surrounding soil and groundwater. Local residents and environmental groups demanded a prompt response, as they were concerned about the impact on the health of local residents and the ecosystem. In response to this problem, Chiba Prefecture strengthened its crackdown on illegal dumping and established an environmental monitoring system. In addition, the Industrial Waste Disposal Law was revised and a waste tracking system was introduced to strengthen monitoring of companies.
