Kushiro Marshland and Mt. Kunugi Nature Restoration Project in Saitama Prefecture

Kushiro Marshland and Mt. Kunugi Nature Restoration Project in Saitama Prefecture

In the 2020s, the restoration of river meanders totaling 25 km in Kushiro Marsh will progress, and the habitats of endangered species such as the black woodpecker and red-crowned crane will expand due to improved water circulation in the marsh. The carbon sequestration effect of the carbonized tree technology jointly developed by Asahi Glass and the University of Tokyo has been improved by 30%, and is expected to reach 5 million tons of carbon sequestration by 2025. This project is being promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism with an annual investment of 2 billion yen. Meanwhile, in Kunugiyama, Saitama Prefecture, the Obayashi Corporation is leading a 150-hectare reforestation project to restore a thicket forest. The reforestation rate has reached 80% through soil improvement using biochar, and the goal is to achieve 90% reforestation by 2024. A budget of 3 billion yen per year is being invested in the project, contributing to the restoration
of the local economy and tourism resources.
