Illegal Dumping of Construction Waste in Miyazaki Prefecture - 2007 Overview
In 2007, approximately 300 tons of construction waste materials were found illegally dumped in mountainous areas and unused land in Miyazaki Prefecture. The waste materials were transported from neighboring prefectures and were not properly processed, raising concerns about possible soil and groundwater contamination. The dumped waste material contained wood, concrete fragments, and asphalt debris, which posed a health risk to nearby residents and an impact on agricultural water supplies. The contractor involved in this illegal activity was arrested for violating the Waste Disposal and Public Cleansing Law and issued an improvement order. Miyazaki Prefecture is working to remove the debris and has strengthened its monitoring system by utilizing the Ministry of the Environment's "Waste Proper Disposal Promotion Project. Local residents also became more active in environmental preservation activities, and measures were taken to curb illegal dumping.
