Gasification and Melting Technology for Medical Waste - October 2000

Gasification and Melting Technology for Medical Waste - October 2000

Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. has developed a gasification and melting furnace for treating medical waste from hospitals, especially used syringes and bloodstained medical instruments. Conventional high-temperature incineration involves the risk of emitting hazardous substances such as dioxin, but this new technology gasifies the waste first at 800-900°C and then melts it at 1,200°C or higher, thereby almost completely eliminating the generation of hazardous substances.

This technology can be used not only for medical waste, but also for organic waste, contaminated soil, incinerated ash, and other difficult-to-process wastes. The treatment capacity is 50 tons per day, and is expected to be used in metropolitan areas such as Tokyo and Osaka. The slag produced after melting is used as a reusable construction material, contributing to the reduction of environmental impact and sustainable waste disposal.
