Utilization of Local Resources Using Nishikawa Wood - Hanno City, Saitama Prefecture - June 2004
Mokunen Kobo in Hanno City, Saitama Prefecture, is attracting attention for its sustainable wood resource utilization model using Nishikawa lumber. The workshop produces approximately 500 tons of wood pellets and firewood annually, which are supplied to the local community and beyond as fuel for heating and power generation. It also composts the by-products of the manufacturing process and provides approximately 200 tons per year to local agriculture. This has resulted in the recycling and utilization of forest resources and revitalization of the local economy. As part of efforts to resolve issues caused by the decline in the volume of Nishikawa timber harvested, the company is promoting cooperation with local forestry workers and strengthening ties between the agricultural and forestry industries. This initiative has been recognized as a model case for recycling-based societies throughout Japan.
