The Silent Wind That Carries Extinction--The Sixth Mass Extinction and Amphibian Tragedy (2020s)

The Silent Wind That Carries Extinction--The Sixth Mass Extinction and Amphibian Tragedy (2020s)

Today we are entering an unprecedented era known as the "Sixth Mass Extinction. In nature, the extinction of species was originally an extremely gradual process. Now, however, the rate of extinction is tens to hundreds of times faster than the natural pace, and organisms are disappearing on a global scale. Deforestation, climate change, overhunting, invasion of alien species, environmental pollution - all human activities are cutting the web of life across land, sea, and air.

Amphibians, in particular, are at the forefront of this crisis. About 40 percent or more of the world's species, including frogs and salamanders, are threatened with extinction. Because they depend on skin respiration and require both water and land environments, they are fatally affected by even the slightest pollution or environmental change. In addition, an emerging infectious disease called chytridiomycosis has been spread around the world by human activities, driving many non-immune species to extinction.

The rapid decline of the African elephant and black rhino, the disappearance of Hawaiian island birds, the collapse of insects, the bleaching of coral reefs - the wave of lost lives is engulfing every ecosystem. The sixth mass extinction is an invisible, silent wind that continues to change the world at this very moment.
