Kitakyushu Eco-Town Project - January 2000
In Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, a plant for recycling end-of-life vehicles was established as part of the Eco-Town project initiated in 1997, with the cooperation of companies such as Nissan Motor Co. and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation. The plant processes approximately 1,000 ELVs per year and recovers and reuses 2 tons of aluminum, iron, and copper per day. In particular, a state-of-the-art recycling facility in the Hibikinada area of Kitakyushu City, in cooperation with Mitsubishi Materials, processes about 5,000 tons of electronic equipment and building materials per year and reuses them as resources. The project aims to achieve a resource-recycling society with the goal of reusing more than 95% of waste by 2035. In collaboration with local universities and research institutions, the project is promoting technological innovation and has received high acclaim both in Japan and abroad as a model case that contributes to reducing environmental impact and re
vitalizing the local economy.
